Assessing the Carrying Capacity of MPAs: How Many Visitors Can Your MPA Hold?

چکیده
habitat: a vertical wall of coral reef, in theory, may be able to sustain more divers than a flatter reef, prone to abrasion by divers with buoyancy problems. In addition, a site’s carrying capacity can increase or decrease with visitors’ level of experience and education. Again, the diver with buoyancy problems has a greater impact on habitat than the diver with good buoyancy control. If a park is able to educate visitors to have less impact per person, its carrying capacity increases accordingly.

Fish life histories and marine protected areas: an odd couple?
Though marine protected areas (MPAs) have recently become a central element of many marine resource management plans, the potentially negative effects of MPAs for fisheries harvests remain the major impediment to their use. Understanding population responses to implementation of MPAs, and their consequences for harvests, is essential to assessing the value of MPAs as a management tool. Here I u...
متن کاملEstimating the carrying capacity of tourism and the necessity of forest stands management (Case study: Darkeshforest, North Khorasan, Iran)
This study focuses on the carrying capacity estimation for Darkesh forest in Northeast Iran. Four factors were used for estimating the carrying capacity including tourist flows, size of the area, optimum space available for each tourist, and visiting time. Results showed that the physical carrying capacity was 2727 ha or 165 visitors/day, while the real carrying capacity was 2719 ha or 132 visi...
متن کاملModels and indicators for assessing conservation and fisheries-related effects of marine protected areas
Two kinds of approaches have been used for assessing conservation and fisheries-related effects of marine protected areas (MPAs): (i) statistical modelling based on field data and (ii) mathematical modelling quantifying the consequences of MPAs on the dynamics of populations, communities, and fisheries. Statistical models provide a diagnostic on the impact of MPAs on the ecosystem and resources...
متن کاملSustainable Ecotourism on Atlantic Islands, with Special Reference to Whale Watching, Marine Protected Areas and Sanctuaries for Cetaceans
Ecotourism in the Atlantic islands region is well-established and growing. Still, in the whale watching and marine tourism sector, many so-called ecotourism enterprises fail to achieve the minimum standards required to qualify as ecotourism. In the Atlantic islands area, approximately 1.7 million people a year go whale watching, with a total expenditure of US$133 million. In this region, the 90...

It is now certain that to ensure a long term sustainable development, protected areas, the favored destinations for ecotourism, required a well written planning management. Each destination however has limited capability which is called “carrying capacity” to invite visitors. Physical, real (ecological) and effective (manageable) are different kinds of carrying capacity. The current study prese...
